Life seemed to have settled down since Cetta’s adventures with the mobsters this past summer. Joseph Insegnante and his thugs were in jail. He will serve time in a U.S. penitentiary for having stolen goods from a municipality. After which he will be shipped back to Canada. Unfortunately, the authorities couldn’t pin the dead guy Cetta found in the garage on him. Although they suspected Joseph had him killed; they had no proof and no body. It was only Cetta’s word against his.
Cetta, as she’s called by her friends, lives in Orchard Hill, a small town outside of Buffalo. Her full name is Concetta, pronounced Consetta, Borski. She has blonde hair and green eyes from her dad’s side and a Sicilian temperament from her mom’s side of the family. Cetta is about five foot seven and a hundred and twenty pounds soaking wet.
Recently she left her job at the hotel in town to work full-time for the hot hunk, Tony Gambino. Tony owns a Private Investigator’s business. On the side he works as a consultant for the Orchard Hill Police Department. Cetta works as sort of an assistant to Tony. Tony has her doing odd jobs like serving notices and making phones calls when they are doing an investigation. Tony stands just under six-foot-tall and is one lean, mean machine. She should mention she’s romantically involved with said hunk.
All in all, things were looking up until this morning when Cetta walked into Tony’s office. Angie, Tony’s office manager, called to her. “Hey Cetta, you got a minute?”
The tone of Angie’s voice worried her. It was Thursday morning and she thought if this is the way the week is going to end she didn’t want to know what the week ahead would bring. Strolling over to Angie, Cetta asked, “Yeah sure, Angie. What’s up?”
“I tried to direct deposit your check into the account number you gave me and it wouldn’t go through. Then Tony received a letta today from the bank saying you is dead.”
Slumping into the chair next to her desk Cetta felt a cold sweat start to form on her brow.
Angela Colucci is a friend of Tony’s family. She went through a rough divorce this past summer and her family thought she needed a change of scenery. Tony was sort of asked to hire her. Angie really has worked out well. Although Angie is far from needing the money. With the settlement from her divorce Angie could shop all day and never worry about how much she spent or maxing out her credit card. Angie says shopping is fun for a while, but she needed a purpose. Cetta figured working for Tony as an office manager was her purpose. One thing Cetta learned was to never be on Angie’s bad side. She carries a gun. Whether or not she would actually use it, Cetta doesn’t want to find out.
When Angie speaks everyone can hear. They all turned to face Cetta and Angie when she said the word “dead”. Cetta understood the startled looks, she was beyond startled. Dipping her head and saying in a whisper, “What are you talking about? Obviously I’m not dead. I’m sitting here, right in front of you.” A million thoughts ran through her mind as the words reverberated in her head; dead, dead, DEAD. “How could this be? There must be a mistake?” Cetta asked.
“I know. See, here’s the letta. You’re gonna have to fix it so’s I can issue you a pay check.”
Cetta was starting to sweat profusely now. How was she going to fix it, better yet, how was she going to pay her rent, put gas in her car, let alone make the payments on her car and worst of all, get her prescription donuts? While she contemplated her current dilemma she saw Tony out of the corner of her eye making a beeline to his office before anyone noticed he was there.
Cetta turned and called to him. “Tony. A word.”
